I have a Remington #2 Rolling Block which has no safety, only full cock. I took it to a gunsmith and after removing the hammer there appears to never have been a safety notch or someone machined it off as it is perfectly smooth and the radius appears to be round. Has anyone ever seen this in this model rifle?

I've had a number of #2 Remingtons over the years, and still have some. Never have seen or owned one that didn't have a half cock notch. The #2 actually had one of those half cocks that truly was half way. Unlike some single shots where the half cock is barely off the block when it clicks in place.
My 1903 Rem. catalog shows the parts breakdown for the #2 and the hammer pictures a distinct half cock notch.

Mr. Possumhunter:

Chances are that the half cock notch has been removed. This is often required if someone has tried to lighten the trigger pull by stoning off the lip of the sear notch. The sweep of the half cock notch has to be below the sweep of the sear notch. This is required so that when the sear comes out of the notch, the half cock notch can pass under the sear as the hammer falls.

What happens when the sear notch lip is shortened, it tends to put the sear notch and the half cock notch in the same sweep. Then when the sear comes out of the notch it is not above the half cock notch. Now when the half cock notch swings by it collides with the sear tip.

This situation is most easily dealt with by reducing, or removing entirely, the half cock notch.

The moral of the story is that to reduce sear engagement, build up the bottom of the sear notch, not cut down the top.

Thanks for the info. I kind of expected that answer but since I had never seen another #2 or any exploded views of the parts I wasn't sure. I only load this when I'm ready to shoot it, so I don't worry too much about it.

That's one of the nice things about a singleshot rifle. The halfcock is not a big thing if you don't load until you are ready to shoot.
Which caliber is your #2? Most were either .32 rimfire, or .22 rimifre.

I believe this is a #2? A custom by Ed Webber I photographed for him. I'm pretty sure it's a .25-20 (SS or WCF?) His personal gopher gun.

It was a 22 when I bought it but the bore was completely shot. I had it relined and chambered for 22 magnum. I had an old long tube scope lying around {nice scope but I have no idea who made it as it's unmarked} and had scope blocks put on it so now it's a small game varmint rifle.

I like the Webber #2! It's styling tends toward the little #7 that we see so seldom. The gophers should feel honored to be exterminated with such a rifle.

Very nice guns! Mine is pretty much of a beater but mechanically alright and accurate enough for groundhogs out to 100-125 yards. I picked it up at a country auction for 120 bucks. A gunsmith friend lined the barrel and put on the scope blocks for 100 more. I think I had 75-100 in the scope so the whole rig set me back about 300 I guess. I was going to have it lined in 17 rimfire but after reading the ballistics of 17 VS 22 mag and the cost difference of the shells figured 22 mag made more sense. The slight accuracy I might have picked up with the 17 wouldn't have made that big of a difference to me as I'm not that great of a shot. Gunsmith sighted it in for me at the range for 100 yds. My brother and I set up some 12 oz. soda cans and when I found out I could put five shells out of five in a soda can at 100 yds. figured that was good enough.
