How did the olde tyme hunters use stalking safeties?

They seem safe, but very inconvenient.

Thanks

I do not mind them at all. I use them similar to how I use any safety while hunting deer. I wait until I am ready to take the animal, slide the safety to the off position and cock the hammer. It is pretty easy to get use to. I like hunting with single shot rifles and muzzleloaders so a slight amount of additional prep just goes with the territory. That and the area I hunt has lots of deer so a missed opportunity is no big deal.
Oh - I thought you used them to secure the locks in the cocked position.

It's the other way around?

Thanks

on most rifles it locks the hammer at half cock, but I have seen them that locked the hammer at full cock. Pretty rare though.

Mine are used at half cock also. I've never seen one that is for full cock.
I had an .577 BPE Adams that locked the hammers in the rest position.
