Hi, I may have an chance to buy a Patric Mullin muzzle loading shotgun. I've never seen one before,it is a beautiful gun.
The gun is an 8g single barrel percussion gun.The damascuss barrel is huge at the breech and tapers nicely to the muzzle.
I find it odd butt the gun doesn't have a place for a ramrod.
Does anyone know were I can find info on the gun,or a person to contact.I really don't know how to put a value on it.

Here is his obit, intersting about the markings denoting guns he made marked"Patrick Mullin" vs guns he finished marked "P Mulln". I wonder if that holds true with some of the other great early american makers. Schaefer,Kirkwood,Etc what do you think???

Didn't Mullin have a brother who was also a gunmanker, or am I thinking of Kirkwood?

John Mullin [brother?] made muzzleloaders , but I have not seen a breechloader marked by John Mullin.

John Mullin (Patrick's older brother) was in New York @1841-61.
He made Sporting rifles Shotguns and Pistols. Have 2 Cased John.
Mulln 12 G M/L's. Parick showed up @ 1850-probably worked with
John a year or so. Doubt if Patrick's gun were as expensive at
the start. Most likely the quality of his guns were noticed
and demand became greater therfore the price went up. Of the
guns I've seen only two wer mared "Patick Mullin". The others
marked "P Mullin" were Barrell actions fit and finished by
Patrick. Noted by his peers to be the Best. All guns seen
with only screw engaving and not choked. He was The Man and still
is in my book.

It doesn't have a place for a ramrod because it's a live pigeon gun. They didn't use them in the field so there was no reason to have a rod with them at all times.

Well I never started a database or anything like that on the Mullins guns. I no longer have that as-new 10 gauge or my 4 gauge, kept my little (for a Mullin)12 gauge double. Over the years I have read about and know of about maybe 30 or so total. They surface very often and when they do they are overlooked because as a general rule most people equate an expensive gun with engraving, no engraving, no sale. The 10 gauge I bought in Vegas a few years ago had been carried to many gunshows with zero interest according to the owner. If anyone has a Mullin I would like to learn about it.

What kind of charge did you have in that 4 gauge when you fired it?

I've shot driven ducks in England with a double 4 bore Holland & Holland firing 3 ounces of shot out of each tube and it didn't recoil anything like that.

I remember 3oz shot but don't remember the amount of powder, remember that it was full of 2F. The film is of my friend Mike who, in all fairness, was standing on some very slipper ice ;-). When I shot the gun there was not a step backwards but then I'm a little larger than Mike.
