Is that Laser or TIG repair?
Posted By: mark Re: A little Micro weld restoration - 02/13/15 11:32 AM
It is a micro spot welder using TIG technology.

Did you do the welding yourself?
Posted By: Buzz Re: A little Micro weld restoration - 02/13/15 11:38 AM
Nice, but will bluing look the same? I had the receiver (drilled holes) on a Model 70 welded up like that, then blued. You could without a doubt tell holes had previously been drilled because the character of the blue was different at the weld spots.

Yes I did the welding.

Here is a barrel before and after. I wish I had taken time to do better photos. The blue came out with no trace of repair. I think the welding on metal with higher carbon content with higher power can cause a concentration carbon around the puddle that shows up in the blueing.

That's awesome Mark. Sure wish I had sent the Model 70 to you.

We're you using coated filler wire? Or did you remove the copper?
Posted By: mark Re: A little Micro weld restoration - 02/13/15 01:51 PM
Uncoated or remove the copper depending on the source.

Great job. Bobby

Yeah, that is the key to getting it to not show in the bluing. And rust blue does a good job covering it up too.

Here's a dumb question- any way to do that to pitted bores?

Mike

Well, here's a dumb answer (guess): too much internal heat to tig or spray weld a sxs bore, but maybe a single barrel???...Geo

Are there any impacts to the strength of barrels caused by welding the pits? I wonder if Sherman Bell could be convinced to perform some destructive testing?

mark did you recut the border?looks good

Very impressive Mark, great work.

Both repairs look great but I have an amature question. Were the barrels done for purely cosmetic reasons and if so could the barrels have been filed down to remove the pits or would that thin the barrels to an unsafe thickness?

Thanks Mark,
Great work and now I know where to go for this.
Posted By: mark Re: A little Micro weld restoration - 02/15/15 02:18 AM
Thanks for all the kind words.

mc, I cut the border with the set up I got from you!

Tom,C filing off the pits would have changed the contour of the barrel.

well, you did a fine job
