Posted By: Sliver Thanks to Clair Kofoed, I have a vierling - 09/25/10 01:20 AM
A while back Clair mentioned that he loads 22 Hornet at low velocities to match the .22 rimfire ballistics. Thus, one can shoot a high velocity round or a low one depending on the situation. This increases the versatility of a gun considerably. Most my .22 shots are within 50 yards and with the regular Hornet round meat would be minced.
I finally bought a Lee hand loader and loaded a few rounds with PB 2.5 gr and Sierra .223 45 gr. They go at about 1250 fps and I can get touching holes accuracy at 30 yards. Quite satisfying.
Thank you, Clair!
I used to do the same thing with 30-30. Loaded a 30 cal round ball, sprue up, with a spot of lubriplate over a half sheet of toilet paper wadding, on top of about 6 grains of 4759, if I remember right. To chamber while deer hunting in case I saw a grouse. Even more quiet than my .22 and perfectly lethal out to about 50 yards for small game.
I wasn't very interested in deer, even when I was hunting them. But, I was always keenly interested in grouse hunting.

Best,
Ted
Glad you found it useful, really nice for a grouse or two in deer camp.
